I'm being overly cautious since (1) I've never done this before, and (b) 
everything I've done so far, has turned into an even bigger job, and 
crankshaft is something I do NOT want to do !!!!

I'm having fun though, venturing where this man have never gone before - the 
"Corvair Frontier" !!!!

Good thing I'm "into" Corvairs, because this one is really getting "into" me 
($$$) !

Charlie, Not so much as a casual touch, but a ding or scrape. After the 
bottom
half of the con rod is removed, immediately slip the plastic shields over 
the
exposed threads. This will prevent the threads from rubbing on the crank 
shaft
as you remove the piston.

ALSO use the plastic shield when reinstalling the con rod.
