 Bob- while you are correct that that the five speeds were all done for lates, it is not true that you couldn't put one in an early,- you just had
to be willing to "do something" about the fit issue regarding the rear cross-member on the earlys. I bought one of these transmissions from
Lin in 1998 or 1999 (pre-ordered before the production run) just for putting in my early. In my case I was going to convert my rear suspension
to the late type (still have the pieces to do it)- resolving the fit issue that way, and getting a nicer rear suspension in the process! Also,
because I wasn't very impressed (neither was Lin) with the funky shift linkage, we decided to modifiy my transmission case so that it could
be mounted upside down, so as to put the t-5 transmission selector shaft nearly in the same spot as it would have been with a stock transmission,
greatly simplifying the shift linkage, and greatly improving the shift feel.
 
Oh what could have been!!
