You can also refer to the assembly manual for correct orientation.  

If you're installing a Clark's repro pedal, put a spacer -- either
temporary or permanent -- between the sides of the pedal bracket.  The
splined shaft has to cut new splines in the new pedal and without the
spacer, you'll collapse the splined side of the bracket.

When you pull the pedal off the splined shaft to mark its positon so you
can 
easily reassemble it at the correct angle.
