Carl,

The smaller pipe that runs completely underneath the car is the high
pressure pipe. The bigger pipe that is routed under the carpet is the
low pressure line. It can run anywhere from 47 to 60 degrees (that
would be degrees Fahrenheit). Uninsulated, it can develop some
moisture on the surface of the pipe. Apparently, not enough to cause
significant rust. It's also an inefficient design since it allows
heat, that isn't used for cooling the air in the evaporator, to warm
up the low pressure refrigerant. IMHO, it was a bad overall design.
