Both Pertronix units should be hooked to 12 volts source. The only difference is that on Pertronix I, the coil is hooked thru the resistance wire (6-8 V.) . On Pertronix II, which uses a different coil (1.5 ohms) it is hooked to 12 volts. That is what instructions say and the way I've used for years on both types with best results.
