Quite a few years ago I saw several cars done this way with roofing tar, there was a guy in central Virginia who did them and swore by it.  He has a good size stash of cars and parts, and did some amount of work on local Corvairs. However, I never ran across him again, so I don't know how well it lasted.  Basically he filled the channel with tar, installed the trim so the tar was squeezed out, and cleaned off the excess with solvent.
