My sources indicate that the first 911s (originally called 901 until protests from Peugeot required a change) were built in September of 1964 as '65 Model Year.  They were built alongside the Type 356C until a sufficient number had been made to allow them to discontinue the 356, which occurred in March 1965.  In April '65, the 356 was replaced with the 4-cylinder 912 model.
In 1962, Porsche had a flar 8 they used in the Model 804 in Formula 1, but the 911 was definitely the first in mass-production with more than 4 cylinders (other than the 'Vair).
