Ian, I am an unrepentant unzipper.

I release the latches at the windshield header, then unzip the window, 
then lower the top.

When raising the top top, once the top is up I re-zip prior to latching 
the latches.

Also, I lube the zipper periodically with a small cake of beeswax.
