Completely possible, James.  I've done it.  Identical late models, 
back in '71 or so when they were still ordinary used cars, one a 
110-PG and one a 110-stick, the PG car was mine and the stick car a 
buddy's.  The two cars were absolutely neck-and-neck....

...until the 1-2 upshift for the stick car, at which point my car 
gained a few feet.  Each subsequent upshift gained me a few more 
feet, and I was first to the next light.
