 On the other hand, for over 40 years, Corvair engines have hung from the back of VW and Porsche transaxles with no issues, with no rear mount.

Not to mention that is how they were designed in the first place, the 
engine mounts to the bell housing only -- and stock  Corvairs were 
designed for a rear mount.  Seems to me that one would want to follow in 
those footsteps.
