1. Is this a real "Option" from dealer or from Chevrolet? Or just optional
on the part of the owner to "self create"?

I now reply:

Mike, it was a real option from Chevrolet. However, it was a
"dealer-installed" option, not a factory-installed option, and it
consisted only of the various brackets and support pieces. The dealers
were instructed to obtain locally the plywood from which to fabricate
the floor.

This may account for it being so uncommon today. I can see dealers
discouraging customers from ordering this option, so that they (the
dealers) did not have to cut and fit the plywood.

2. What would be the advantage of creating a "flat floor"? Seems like it'd
be giving up a good deal of bed capacity.

I reply:

With the flat floor, items could be loaded from the tailgate and moved
all the way forward without falling into the center section. Items
could be loaded over the sides without the need to reach alllll the way
down into the center section. And items could be hidden from view under
the level floor section.
