<VV> Brake fluid advice needed

1996 vehicles are at the time to replace the rusted steel lines. We've been
through the 1994, then 1995, now 1996!

DOT 3 was the factory fill.

Either 3 or 4 will work fine as well as 5.1.  All three of these are
polyglycol based.  DOT 5 is silicon based and must not be mixed the
polyglycol based fluids.

Guys,
A woman at work has a 96 Chevy SUVs; and her brakes are not working
well.  I plan to look to see if the brake fluid is low.

Is it likely that this will take DOT 3 or 4?  Is there any easy way to
tell what is in it?
