You can disconnect the half shaft at both ends. And the outer stub axle will 
turn fine. However, You must fabricate some type of link to hold the outer 
upright/trailing arm vertical (which the half shaft does). In other words, 
you need an upper control arm. It ought to be fastened to the differential 
and on the outer ends, somehow to the stamped metal upright/trailing arm. 
You could weld brackets or maybe drill holes in it and mount flanges you 
make up to attach to your cross piece to each/other side.
