it's good advice to go easy on starting fluid. Me and a coworker managed to blow the valve covers and oil pan off a 79 Ford work truck. I sprayed some then he sprayed some. When he tried to fire it all we got was a large bang and oil everywhere. Needless to say the boss wasn't happy. Ever since I go easy on the stuff.

tim, I respect your knowledge of all things mechanical (and 
electronic..) but, I must disagree with this as a blanket statement.

I do agree that a warning should be on all ether in bold print that a 
little psst is all that is needed for most engines.

I have used ether for many years to start long sitting balky gasoline 
engines (large and small), and as a troubleshooting aid to test 
everything else except fuel in a non starting engine. I've never had a 
problem or caused damage, as I just use a small spitz. A wonderful tool 
if used properly.

It is true that if everything is in proper working order, ether is not 
needed.

Also note all diesels are not the same. Those large industrial diesels 
(Cats, etc) that have ether bottles already plumbed in are one thing, 
but small auto diesels are subject to the same damage from over use as 
their gasoline cousins. I'm sure if you emptied the ether can in a Cat 
it would have dire consequences also! ggg

I'm sure you have seen the damage, but was any caused by just a small 
spitz, or just heavy handed in a hurry people?
