 The term for the light being discussed is CHMSL, or center high mounted stop light, which became mandatory for the 1986 model year. Not sure how many cars had it before then, but it wasn't very many.

Is this part of the "How old are you" topic?

I suspect that was controlled by individual states at the time and my WAG is 
that stop lights (one at least) became mandatory in the teens.  Uh, that 
would make it close to 100 years ago.  Even Smitty is unable to testify on 
this one.  <GRIN>
