<VV> What is This?

It looks like one of the performance boosters that was sold at the old time
fairs.  Someone would have a car set up and running with one of these then
switch to stock ignition and show the difference in the spark output.  They
really didn't do much for performance. The resistor is probably in the
circuit because these things were made for 6 volt cars.  This was back in
the fifties.  JC Whitney sold them also.

While it resembles a coil (very much like a new Jeep coil) and is grouped
with the dropping resistor, I have never seen anything quite like it.
