Hello Ulli,

To me this description suggests an electrical fault.  I would look for 
possible grounding of the ignition system, an intermittent power connection 
or perhaps a failing coil or condenser. However, it would be helpful to 
rule out fuel supply issues before doing a bunch of electrical 
troubleshooting. Try driving the car again and if it shuts down, quickly 
pull the air cleaner and cross tube.  Look down into one of the carburetors 
while actuating the throttle linkage.  If there is a squirt from the 
accelerator pump, then the fuel supply is most likely okay.

On a hunch, I would borrow the coil off one of your other Corvairs before I 
walk back.
