I did not include federal gasoline tax, since all of us in the US pay the
same amount. I did not bother to look up Canada or Mexico either. Our
European members can chime in with REALLY high numbers!

Federal Tax rate is 18.4 cents per gallon.

20 + 18.4 is very close to the number you saw on the pump. That was total
tax.

Not sure where those numbers come from but here in TX 20 years ago it was
38.5 cents per gallon. I doubt it's gone down. They used to have a
sticker on the pump with the tax rate. I wish someone would hold them
accountable and at least make them spend the money on roads. We wouldn't
have all the toll roads here if they actually used the money for roads.

So it depends on where you are driving your Corvair.

Here in Va we are #40 in state gaoline tax, 19.8 centes per gallon. Soon to
go up...

In Texas you pay 20 centes per gallon, #38 in the ranking.

Guess who wins #1 ranking?

No, not California, they are #2 at 48.6 centes per gallon.

New York wins #1 at 49 cents per gallon.

I know here in Virgina several jurisdictions have extra taxes on top of
that 19.8 cents per gallon. Typically 2.5 to 5 cents for area
projects(commuter rail).

Plan your trips!
