<VV> Cynical Question on Acetone/ATF Mix

Not to state the obvious...
1. Acetone is seriously volatile. With a BP of ~130F, it doesn't last very long.
2. Acetone is hygroscopic. Not what you want for a rust penetrant.
3. It will work if it's made up fresh, it simply won't last very long.
4. From a commercial standpoint, why would anyone sell something this bloody flammable?
5. Commercial rust penetrants use a variety of solvents/surfactants to increase 'wetting power' that don't have the problems of acetone.

Subject: <VV> Cynical Question on Acetone/ATF Mix
I have heard of the 50/50 acetone/ATF (A/ATF) mix before. If this cheapo
mix is twice as good as the best commercial stuff and nearly five times as
good as the worst commercial stuff, why hasn't someone marketed the A/ATF
stuff and swept the market? In effect; is the cheap stuff really that good?
Does anyone have a link to a real controlled test or is this merely an
urban myth? I am just posing the question; I don't know. I think it would be
difficult to make the claim the A/ATF liquid is twice as good as the best
commercial product (etc.) without a real statistically significant
sampling. This would require hundreds of identical nut and bolt combinations
with
very controlled corrosion characteristics and expensive test equipment.
Granted, even if the A/ATF stuff merely falls in the middle of the
commercial stuff, it is a viable alternative. Bur I have seen no proof that it
even lies in the middle. However, whatever its effectiveness, if it isn't as
good as the best of the commercial stuff you may give up on a stuck nut
prematurely.

A friend who is not a Corvair person sent this to me. It sounds
interesting.? Has anyone tried it?? What were your results?

Most of us have had difficulty at one time or another with loosening nuts
or bolts, screws etc..I have been fooling around with a 50% mixture of ATF
and Acetone with terrific results . It is a lot cheaper as well.
The engineering tests on this are as listed:
no oil....516 lbs
WD-40...238 lbs
PB blaster....214 lbs
Liquid wrench...127 lbs
Kano Kroil...106 lbs
ATF-Acetone mix...53 lbs
Lacquer thinner seems to work as well.
I don't know who did the testing but this stuff seems to work for me. I
would like others to test this out as I can't believe my results so far & I
have no more frozen bolts screws etc. Perhaps you could post to this forum
with your personal results
