IF I use used push rods , I always run then thru my carburetor cleaner ,  
and rinse them with water from a pressure nozzle. . I always blow them dry 
and  wipe them., and roll them on a chunk of glass to make sure they are not 
bent. I  have even found a slightly out of true new pushrod..Also look at the 
ends for  any signs of gaulling or roughness. they should be very smooth.
Same basic procedure with used rockers , no roughness at the ball surface , 
 no wear from valve stem , and pushrod socket smooth. I have resurfaced a 
few  where the valve stem rides with a bench belt sander , if they are not 
too worn.  New rockers and pushrods are not that expensive , so new with 
grooved balls is  the best way. I suppose even better would be the mated parts. I 
have never had  trouble using grooved balls on good used rockers.
If I save rockers , I use bag ties , or wire ties to keep mated parts  
together. Then I check them later , and toss bad ones. I usually  use  new ones 
on motors not for myself.
