Clark is correct.  Using most automotive carbs on an aircraft engine will work well only at the altitude it's jetted for.
     I believe most people who use Corvair engines in aircraft utilize either "aircraft" carburetors which have a manual mixture adjustment built into them so the pilot can adjust for altitude, or they use "altitude compensating" carbs, the most common of which are the CD Series carbs made by Bing.
