Metal plugs? Are you talking about the original "punch outs"? I've always 
seen rubber ones to fill the hole. Never had a problem with them and I've 
gotten the brakes pretty darn hot in road course and/or autocross racing.

I assume I melted the 70s vintage ones out of my street Corsa with Velvetouch brakes as at one point they were gone. 
maybe there are/were different rubber recipes. 
Brake drums get hot, especially compared to backing plates where normal cars have adjuster holes
