It is hard to apply recommended oil across different engines much less
different manufactures. It was interesting to listen at the three oil
engineers from Ashland oil (Valvoline) on their recommendations for oils
for Corvair engines. This was at the Lexington convention. Their
consensus was, they had no recommendations. Ashland had not tested
their oil in an aircooled engine since 1966, while they had changed oil
formulations about every two years. They felt that applying their
findings for small and medium sized, water cooled engines was not
applicable to air cooled engines. They also stated, the use of fuel
injection cause the most change in engine formulations because it
eliminated oil dilution by gasoline from a cold start.

As for differential oil, they recommended their GL-5. When ask about
what it would do to the brass syncro blocker rings in Corvair manual
transmissions, they stated the sulfur compounds were tied-up in the
molecules and would not attack brass.

As a side note, the wife's 2009 Jetta TDI has 42 different brands of
oils approved for use in the clean diesel (five quarts 0W-30, every
10,000 miles). The only one sold in the US is Castrol SLX Gold. Try
ordering that at your FLAPS. Fortunately there are many Internet sources.
