A cheap change that helps a lot is to used a piece of tubing/pipe to raise
the crossover that goes from the air cleaner to up off the carb throat a
couple of inches.  It helps smooth out the sharp bend that the air needs to
make as it enters the carb throat.  Or, just go to the Otto or similar air
cleaners as previously suggested.
