Cash---If you have a Ohmmeter, and the specs from the FLAPS it's very easy
to check a standard GM coil. Test probes to the Pos and Neg terminals is one
test, and center hole (where wire Goes) to the (I think) Pos terminal is the
other.
Chances are though, the coil might test good cold on the bench, but the
windings will break down once it gets heated up and the readings can change.
Done this on the car to check the primary windings (pos and neg terminal).
Normally, you're dealing with a 40 year old or older coil. You don't have
to go nuts to get a good coil. A Standard Ignition "Bluestreak" Coil is
available at most GOOD FLAPS, like Big A, Carquest, etc---Don't look in the
discount joints for one. Paid about 18 bucks for it and have had no issues.
Bluestreak is Standard Ignitions "Top of the line" gear. GP Sorenson (used
to be and still might be Advance Auto's main line) is Std Ignition "GARBAGE"
line. Bluestreaks are also made in that USA place.

On the coil - borrow a known good one from a buddy. One that is known to
operate well in his Corvair. You can just lay it on the rear frame rail for
the test. If the symptoms leave, you've solved the problem. It IS possible
to buy a defective new one, but does not happen that often.
