<VV> ATF Change

Joel,

I've had the same results in all of my used cars and my wife's 1973 Duster (purchased new). Fresh fluid does make a real difference in used transmissions--noticable in better shifting within miles of a fluid change. Our only new car together (a 2010 Malibu six speed auto) will get its first change at around 30K. My 2004 Buick Lesabre has had changes at 30K since I bought it with 17K and it now has 134K. I just have never known anyone to change the transmission fluid more frequently as transmissions don't have the same rate of contamination as does a combustion engine. I'm not second guessing your maintenance--some of my wife's family think I waste money with my own frequency of changes. Your vehicles certainly benefit from your care.

Bob

 My '82 Malibu TH250 was
lipping in reverse when I bought the car several years back. I changed the
luid and filter and started my 3K fluid changes and within about 3 fluid
hanges it quit slipping. It has endured a lot of abuse since and is still
orking fine.

Another point on maintenance intervals - people selling cars have several
easons not to tell you what the best maintenance intervals are. Two I can
hink of are 1) being able to advertize lower maintenance costs 2) wanting to
ell you a new car when yours wears out. Of course one balancing factor is
rofit on servicing the car. There's also perceived reliability as a reputation
or the company. The only real way to know is to have your oil analyzed.
hings I think I know: My manual transmissions seem to work better when I
hange the oil. I've seen a notoriously unreliable automatic take a lot of
iles and abuse when the fluid was changed regularly. I haven't had any issues
ith my transmissions since I've been changing at 3K. My '82 Malibu TH250 was
lipping in reverse when I bought the car several years back. I changed the
luid and filter and started my 3K fluid changes and within about 3 fluid
hanges it quit slipping. It has endured a lot of abuse since and is still
orking fine. The 4.4L V8 doesn't have much power but it does full throttle
pshifts as often as vehicles around me will allow.
ack on the subject of 700R4s. I've rebuilt more than I can count. A very
ommon point of failure is the rear planet. The needle bearings die, the gears
isalign and then it breaks. I rebuilt one in my '84 Caprice before I was doing
he 3K oil changes and the new rear planet exploded at about 20K.
ll that said it's hard to kill a PG behind a V8 let alone (in front of?) a
orvair.

Joel,
Why? The automatic transmission fluid should be able to make it 30,000 to
0,000 miles in stop and go service before a change and that was with the
riginal Dexron.
