PS, I'd also like to see if there would be some way to use a snowmobile
type pulley that would change it's effective diameter in response to RPM
via centrifugal force.  Of course this might make belt retention more
troublesome.

On that topic, I've driven 150,000 plus miles in Corvairs over the past 10
years.  I had not thrown a belt (excepting a barn car with rusty pulleys
that I'd just got running) in all that time until last fall.  I was very
sad when that came to an end.  The belt snapped.  I suspect it might have
been one of the many new but well aged "spare" belts I've found under the
seats and in trunks when I've purchased Corvairs.  Around here things go
from one car to the another so often it's sometimes impossible to remember
what part came from where.
