<VV> Decoding vehicle VIN numbers : "18W101706" ? - see "redundant"

Right, but what is the "1" before the "8" in the engine block/case VIN ?

I thought that digit was the "model" from the car's VIN, and so "78W" would
be a 1968 Monza(as in "105678W101706"), right?

Back in the day, when I worked for General Motors we used either VIN
or Vehicle Identification Number
but not VIN number or Vehicle VIN.

Is "Vehicle VIN" as redundant as "VIN number" ?

I'm just saying that either one better than "Vehicle IN" or "VI
number" (not to mention that "vehicle VIN on the engine block" is a
mouthful, right?

I looked up "redundant" and found : "Redundant": See "redundant"

But to answer the original question, doesn't the "8" in "18W101706"
designate it as a 1968, and an early one at that?

But what is the "1" before the "8"? I thought that digit was the

Isn't saying vin number being doubly redundant again? It's like
saying RPMs per minute, LCD display, etc. <G>
