It should be easy to tell where the problem is by where the cable breaks.  If it breaks near the ball then the ball isn't moving in the clevis properly if it breaks where it runs around the pulley then the pulley is too small for the cable.

rick, I too had a similar thing happen, and I too shifted without the clutch and drove it home.
I find your binding story interesting and think you are probably on track. I've replaced 1 cable in 225k miles of driving, so I think the design is fine. Mark Durham
