<VV> Hot air cover below oil cooler

I have a '67 Monza convert, 110, 4 sp. Just below the oil cooler there is
an opening in the shroud (about 2 x 4 inches). To my knowledge, the car
didn't come with a cover for that opening. The only reference that I can
find to that cover in the owner's manual is under the Air Conditioning
section where it says to install the cover in summer and remove it in
winter. I do not have A/C (and do not have a cover) and so have always just
left
the opening open. Clark's lists the part as <<Cover - Hot Air - Below Oil
Cooler - 67-69 A/C or Smog>> implying again that this applies to cars with
A/C. A Corvair-knowledgeable friend, however, tells me the opening should
always be covered—A/C or no A/C — to improve engine cooling. Can anyone
shed further light on this?
