Ted - The plate is used on all late models. Most of the plates have a
U-shaped appendage that stick down to prop-open the drivers side thermostat door
 - just a little, in hot weather. In cold weather, you remove the plate,
roll it over and reinstall the screw to hold it, with the door pointed out
away from the hole. This lets the thermostat door remain closed, and the
hotter air to re circulate back into the engine compartment and help to warm
up the motor more quickly. You have been caught be a "Catch-22" The plate
tells you what to do. (see photo below) But if you don't have the plate, you
can't read on it what to do. If you need a plate, I will send you one for
the cost of postage, but first check with other local owners. These are all
over the place.

the opening open. Clark's lists the part as <<Cover - Hot Air - Below Oil
Cooler - 67-69 A/C or Smog>> implying again that this applies to cars with
A/C. A Corvair-knowledgeable friend, however, tells me the opening should
always be covered—A/C or no A/C — to improve engine cooling. Can anyone
shed further light on this?
