<VV> Old/ New alternator mounts

GM didn't always use the voltage sensor wire.  I have an ~82 Buick Regal with a 10Si that has the sense wire looped back to the charge wire from the factory.  It does use the trigger/idiot light wire.
I don't like 1 wire systems but if you have a large enough wire to prevent voltage drop running from the alt to the distribution point what would be the difference?
