When
some auction houses no longer sell anything for less than six figures and when
seven-figure Ferraris are as commonplace as seagulls, 10 grand won’t buy you
much at the automotive auctions in Monterey in August. It would have, however,
bought you this 1962 Chevrolet Greenbrier Custom Camper van and left you with
$1,000 for gas and snacks to get you home.
Built
from 1961-1964 as a factory-built camper, the Custom Camper Unit
package included such amenities as a vinyl floor, a door-mounted folding table,
a couch base (that converted to a bed) with under-drawer storage, removable
seat pads, a Coleman cooler, a Coleman water jug, a Coleman LP gas stove, and
drapes for the windows. Later models, built after 1962, also included a pump
sink, a 14-gallon water tank and a larger ice chest in lieu of a cooler. What
the Custom Camper Unit package didn’t include was a screened and extendable roof,
meaning that this example also features an aftermarket conversion for improved
ventilation and added headroom.

The van included many original, vintage accessories. Photo courtesy Mecum
Auctions.
The seller of the Custom Camper van at Mecum’s Monterey
auction stated that the van features its original paint and
interior, as well as its original transmission. The rear-mounted flat-six
air-cooled engine has reportedly been rebuilt, though it’s not clear how long
ago the work was performed. In 2011, the Greenbrier received a new master
cylinder, new brakes and new shocks, translating to added peace of mind for its
current owner. It also includes a gas heater, window screens, and custom
cabinetry built by its original owner, features that you won’t necessarily find
on other Greenbrier Camper Vans.
Up
close, the van showed its age with the usual and expected wear, but appeared to
be in very good overall condition. With a bit of preservation and upkeep, it
should deliver years of reliable service to its new owners, at a fraction of
the cost of a comparable Volkswagen Westfalia camper.

Mecum’s top seller, a 1955 Porsche 550/1500 RS Spyder. Photo by Kurt Ernst.
The
top seller of Mecum’s Monterey auction was a 1955 Porsche 550/1500 RS
Spyder, believed to be the first with space frame construction (as
opposed to ladder frame construction). Complete with a competition history
(partially documented on the car’s cockpit tonneau cover), the Porsche drew a
selling price of $3.75 million, on par with the $3.7 million realized for a
comparable Porsche 550 Spyder at a 2012 Gooding and Company auction. Rounding
out the top 10 sales were a 1961
Chevrolet Corvette that won back-to-back SCCA national
championships, which sold for $1.4 million; a one-owner Ferrari F40 with just 473 miles, which sold for $1.325 million; a 1964
Shelby 289 Independent Competition Cobra, which sold for $925,000; a
Bloomington Gold certified 1968
Chevrolet Corvette L88 convertible, which sold for $800,000; an
unrestored 1969 Ford
Mustang Boss 429, with only 902 miles, which sold for $550,000; a 1963 Porsche
356B Carrera 2 Coupe, which sold for $385,000; a 2006 Ford GT
Heritage Edition, which sold for $377,500; a 1967 Yenko
Super Camaro 450, converted by Dick Harrell, which sold for
$350,000; and a 1967
Chevrolet Corvette convertible, 427/435hp, complete with original
drivetrain, which sold for $335,000.

Hemmings Find of the Day - 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 Mk III Posted by Kurt Ernst - Austin-Healey prices have been on the rise over the past few years, as more and more sports cars buyers develop a passion for the brand's performance and understated good looks. Find one in need of more than just cosmetic restoration, and a bargain roadster can quickly turn into a six-figure project. That's why it's generally best to purchase the cleanest version you can find (within your budget, of course), as you can generally avoid any restoration surprises by doing so. This 1967 Austin-Healey 3000 Mk III for sal...Read On>>

Stan Hywet Hall announces new concours d'elegance Posted by Daniel Strohl -
Photo courtesy Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens. While the cancellation of the Glenmoor Gathering of Significant Automobiles in Canton, Ohio, left a concours d'elegance-shaped hole in the Northeastern Ohio automotive calendar this year, a new concours event has stepped up to fill that void next year at the Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens in nearby Akron. David Schultz, former executive director of the Glenmoor Gathering, will take on the same role for the new Concours d'Elegance at Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens and noted i...Read On>>

Cars of Futures Past - 1954 Kaiser Darrin 161 Posted by Kurt Ernst -
1954 Kaiser Darrin 161. Photograph by David LaChance. If asked to name the first production American sports car with a convertible top, inline six-cylinder engine and a fiberglass body, most enthusiasts will immediately identify the Chevrolet Corvette, launched in 1953. While this is correct if the qualifier is first-to-market, it's incorrect if the qualifier is first-shown-to-the-public; in fact, the Kaiser Darrin 161 was shown to the public at the 1952 Petersen Los Angeles Motorama, held nearly two months before ...Read On>>

Every Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance Best of Show winner Posted by Daniel Strohl -

In the comments to our recent post about the 1934 Packard 1108 Twelve Convertible Victoria that won this year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, Scotty G. wanted to know how frequently American vehicles have won Best of Show at the world's most prestigious concours. After all, the owner of this year's winning car, Judge Joseph Cassini III, as well as Pebble Beach itself in announcing the winner, pointed out the fact that Americ...Read On>>
