John,

I have used "mechanics wire" successfully as well.  Start at the round hose end and feed it through.  If you find that the awl has enlarged the spray end too much you can carefully recrimp the edges using needle nose pliers while the wire is in place to get a smaller orifice.  Been there.

Got an old  guitar string?  Plenty stiff enough to do the job and also will 
clean out small carb holes like those for the accel pump.
New guitar strings at a music store are very cheap.
