To be some what objective, the 60 Corvair 500 was indeed a "plain Jane" car. Many of the writers of that time pointed this out, noting that for a few dollars more the buyer could step up to a 700 which corrected all of those issues. He is carping on the shift lever, which is lame because any bench seat with a floor shift had the lever curved over the seat. As to the seats, comfort depends on your physique - I can't drive my wife's car for more than an hour before my legs are killing me, but I can drive my "bucket" seat 62 Monza all day. One interesting thing is that he does not comment on handling, good or bad.

That commentary does show the "depth" of the usual analysis though :
The Lancer had a nice radio? I think he did a fine job of impeached his own
redibility, except of course, to the un-informed, who could not understand
ny deeper analysis anyway?
As Darwin said, the educated will understand, the problem will be with the
ess educated who will know it to be false, as was proven by the original
orvair disinformation campaign?
And so it goes on and on ...

Well at least it sounds like he is almost over his problems. Maybe another

The latest (April 2013) issue of "Collectible Automobile" magazine has a
Collectible Comment" (i.e. letter to the editor) singing the praises of
is parents' then-new 1961 Dodge Lancer and bashing his 1960 Corvair 500
our door that he felt paled in comparison.  As to the Corvair, he said;
>From the first day, I disliked that car. The doors were lined with what
ppeared to be painted cardboard. The seats seemed to be constructed so as
o enrich back surgeons. The shift lever was curved in such a way as to
verlap the front seat. My folks' Lancer had an efficient automatic
ransmission and a nice radio all of which my Corvair lacked." He neglected
o mention that if he hadn't been so damn cheap he could have had an
utomatic transmission and a radio in his Corvair and even opted for a 700
r, if he'd waited to purchase the Corvair until at least May of 1960, a
onza. He goes on to say; "The Corvair would go on to suck money out of my
lmost-empty pockets...."
