Why would it be "uncontrolled"?

The vacuum advance curve is in the shop manual. Just because you change 
the mechanical advance, the vacuum curve still adds/subtracts the same 
amount.

And if you want to limit the vacuum advance effect, that is also easy to do.

Yes, it is trial and error when modifying the mechanical advance weights 
and springs and using vacuum advance, but the results will be better. 
You must have spent time in southern California where the VAs were 
disconnected as part of that 70'S emission requirements. The rest of us 
still have working VAs. Except stock turbo engines...
