OK, so I have looked at a number of sources- seems different metals when 
they rust, can be either magnetic or not. Iron Oxide is. Think cassette 
audio tapes- that is how they work. The Oxide coating is magnetic.

So, magnets stuck to the bottom of a fuel tank should help in holding 
rust down. It it fills up with rust to the outlet, it's probably time to 
change out the tank.....

This would apply also to the engine and trans. Different metals can be 
magnetic or not. It's bloody complicated.  But it certainly won't hurt 
to add magnets, might even do some good.
