Rob,

I concur with Harry's thoughts on the thermostat shrouds and damper doors.
You'll probably get  contrary recommendations as well. I think it's
probably personal preference.

As far as the Parade issue goes, I've made this recommendation to other car
guys (not necessarily Corvairs), and received a lot of thanks. You probably
shouldn't spend as much time worried about your top as you should about
your upholstery. I had a friend who had the honor of transporting a couple
of high school beauty queens in a parade with his 61 Lincoln 4-door
convertible. He also had the honor of replacing the original upholstery
because they failed to remove their spike heels when climbing on and off
the top. If you're  going to do this on a routine basis, I would toss
together some plywood, carpet, fabric and some padding to give them a real
seat that doesn't damage your car.
