Now, that's where the spray bar and water injection would really come in
handy!

Frank Duval mentioned Afton Mountain. which is a 2-3 mile uphill going into Waynesburo VA on I –64. Most Corvairs will not pull it in top gear unless the driver wants to see red lights on the dash.

I hear chatter from the back with people saying, look at that, he is giving us the bird. What’s his problem? I looked in the mirror and saw a Pep Boys Special Mustang gaining on us. Somebody said get him Smitty. As he came past I dumped it into 2nd for a short spell and went back into third when the power fell off. He saw me right away and I heard him down shift as raw fuel smoke poured out the pipes. I was closing on him rapidly by the time we got past the caravan and I could switch lanes. I blew right on past my turn off with the temp indicator pegged and a hundred yards ahead of him. And yes I returned the bird to him as I allowed him to pass. I doubt he reported to his buddies how he challenged a bunch of Corvairs. I guess that is the kind of spirited driving John is talking about. Nothing smart about it , but it felt good.
