The stock coupler has a slot on it, the tube from the front has a tab, but
may slide on anyway. The easiest way - it is always a two-person job - is
to install the shifter from the top, with someone pushing it down and
holding the lever centered, then slide the shifter female portion up from the
bottom with the tip sliding into the coupler. Make sure you have the two
shimmed at the floor so that when the four nuts on the bottom are tightened,
there is a minimum of play between the shifter and the floor. It should NOT
clamp tight to the floor, but not have much play either. At the back, put the
trans in neutral, slide the coupler into the tube (Put the clamp on but do
not tighten it.) and then onto the shifting shaft in the trans. Insert the
pin and the cotter pin. Have the person in the drivers seat hold the
shifter in an approximate neutral position, say between first and second, but
not leaning to either side. move the shift input shaft to an approximate
middle of neutral position and tighten the clamp. Try to find each gear with
the shifter. If you cannot turn the shaft enough to find reverse (the most
often failing) put the shifter back into neutral, loosen the clamp a little
and have the driver push the lever to the right a bit, and then tighten the
clamp. This may have to be repeated to make sure both Reverse and
third-fourth can be reached. You will have to make sure that the fore/aft travel
lets you engage 1-2 and 3-4, again if needed loosen the clamp, then preload
the shifter the other way, and re-tighten.

>From having been removed and a new four speed installed can someone give
me some steps as to how to adjust the shifter linkage on a lm coupe with a
four speed. The shop manual is not that detailed. The coupler was removed
from the tube for clean up so this May not be properly orientated on the
rod? How do u find reverse on the trans? Do the adj need to be made with the
trans in a certain gear?
Thanks
