And if you have an accurate tach, you can record all the rpm drops for 
each cylinder that is shorted and do a cylinder balance test. If the 
rpms drop for each shorted cylinder approximately the same amount, then 
the compression, valves, etc. are approximately balanced.  It is a quick 
check.
