I would appreciate any advice on what to do before starting the first time. That old gas is going to smell really bad so be ready for that. The inside will very likely be too rusty for dependable, long term use so you should pull both, add some pea gravel, shake them (a lot), dump the gravel; then flush with water, blow dry and add tank sealant.
