I was pretty sure I remembered that another manufacturer built a flat 8 in  
the early 1960's.
 
Who?   P p p p p p  Porsche.........   :-)
 
1962 - 1.5 liter Type 804 Gran Prix car. 1.5 liter.  Dan Gurney  won the 
French GP at Rouen- and then a 
            non-championship GP at Solitude, Germany.  Approx. 180 HP
 
1962 -- Type 718 sports car.  2 liter - approx. 225 HP for the  European 
Hillclimb  Championship and            
             Endurance racing.
 
1963(?)  RS60 sports car also used this 2 liter flat 8.
