Kent,
Thanks for the thorough explanation. I'd be interested to hear what other people's experiences have been. At my local auto paint shop I was frequently told that PPG did not have a formula for old paint codes.

Hi Steve (& group),

That code was 8290, not 8240. :-)

I was solving a very specific problem so I can't answer your more general
question. My assumption is that if you give any competent automotive paint
store a Chevy paint code, they can come up with a PPG Omni AU MTK formula,
assuming that someone at PPG did the work to color-match all of the colors.
Since there are quite a few colors each year, they *might* have left out a
few of the less-popular ones.

1964 Chevy truck Ivory (aka Off-White) is Chevy paint code 526. The
September, 1963 Chevy Service News gave refinish paint formulas for the
three most-popular paint manufacturers for all of the 1964 model year
colors. These are the codes for code 526 Ivory (aka Off-White):

DuPont: 4195-L

Rinshed-Mason: A-1599

Ditzler: DL-8319

The DuPont and Rinshed-Mason paints were acrylic lacquer; the Ditzler was
enamel. None of these paint systems are sold any more but, as we have
learned, at least PPG Omni AU MTK has had the colors crossed over into
modern materials. As a point of reference, the main body color of my
Rampside (Black, code 500) is done in Glazurit paint.

The Chevy codes (e.g., 526) often changed from year to year, and the color
names also changed occasionally. The only way to tell if the same paint was
used in two different years is to compare the refinish paint formulas. The
September Chevy Service News is generally where that was published every
year, so that dealer shops had the info they needed at the start of the
model year. (New model year vehicles typically went on sale the first week
of October.)

Kent,
Is that to say that 8240 is equivalent to cameo white; and if so, is it
equivalent to cameo white for all years? This is good information that I'd
like to post on the Corvanatics web page. Do you know of any other ppg
formulation numbers that are equivalent to Corvair-95 colors?
Steve

Hey Rod (& group),

PPG's Omni AU MTK line has the correct formula so you don't have to do a
color match. The formula number is 8290.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Any commercial automotive
paint store that handles PPG should have no trouble. The way they found it
for me was I told them that I wanted 1964 Chevy truck Ivory / Off-White,
code number 526.

Happy Labor Day weekend...I'm prepping my 64 greenbrier for eventual paint,
and wondering if anyone has a preferred white beltline & dash color and/or
code recommendation vs the off-white/ivory factory code per corvair kid's
wonderfully detailed webpage? FYI I'm going for a reasonably stock refresh
so original may be perfectly fine - btw, main color will be factory
turquoise.

Thx!
