<VV> '65 Corvair heater "FAN" motor shaft keyed?

JR ~

I see that my heater "FAN" motor shaft has a "flat spot" (like the steering
shaft into steering box) that locks the squirrel cage so it doesn't slip.

Maybe this was new for the late models?

See pix below ...

And yes, it squealed like a banshee, so I squirted some 90 wt around it as
it spun (without the cage) until it quieted down.

Then with the cage mounted it was nicely balanced and ultra-quiet!

It was so successful, I took it out of the Corsa too (that has been sitting
for 25 years.)

Charlie

BTW... If you have a metal "squirrel cage" attached to the blower motor
and were having a squeal sound - that typically comes from the fan (squirrel
cage) slipping on the part that holds the fan to the shaft from the motor.
Greasing it might quiet it for a while (don't know - never tried that), but
the fan is probably running slower than the motor. Eventually, the fan will
likely stop running - or nearly so - no matter how fast the motor is
running.

You might try to peg the fan to that metal center piece in some way so that
it cannot slip.

Even if the fan motor is not running you will still receive some "warmish"
air through the heat system from the top side of the engine as well as a
portion of the air pushed by the engine fan. Probably enough for around
town driving, but probably not enough for the highway. Push the HEAT lever
forward without pushing the fan lever forward for a test run at this.

Later, JR
