A friend has a ?64 on which the right axle stub can be wiggled noticeably by
shaking the U joint. Does this indicate that the retainer is out of
adjustment or that the bearing is shot? He has noticed some noise coming
from it and it has been leaking oil. Any ideas on this?

Smitty Says; Ron the problem is a pain in the neck but not dangerous in my
opinion. There is no adjustment. The wear is in the differential carrier
or on the axel yoke (as it is commonly called) It can get so bad that even
changing seals will not make it stop leaking, but still won't fall apart.
Usually the only cure is to replace the carrier assembly. Make sure the U
joint is not loose either in the bearing cups or the cups in the yoke and
you should be good to go in that end. What goes on at the bearing end of
the axle is a whole different matter.
