Eric,  I had problem getting my '61 Lakewood to latch properly and after a lot of adjusting and tinkering finally does latch, but not quite like it should.  I was afraid to close  the lid and not able to open it.  I'll look at mine and see if there's anything I think might help you out with your problem.
