What Smitty really meant to say was
"Never ever ever pry, hammer, or
otherwise try to use force" ON A 1964 CORVAIR. Obviously you wouldn't want to damage such a fine and valuable automobile.

However, feel free to use a hammer on a F**d Mustang......

James the 64 steering gear and shaft come out the bottom of the car in one
piece. Got to jack it up a ways. The steering wheel has to come off first
but that is all you need to remove on top. Never ever ever pry, hammer, or
otherwise try to use force to remove the wheel. You will only succeed in
breaking something. Use a puller designed for the job. It will pop right
off.
