<VV> 4-speed transmissions have "one more gear to go wrong" ?

Why?

Did your father fail to order a 4-speed, thinking logically that the 4-speed
was standard? Seems a reasonable omission considering he went to the
trouble of ordering an otherwise pretty well-optioned car!

Was he disappointed when he got the car thinking "What the heck! I have to
ASK for a 4-speed in a car like this??"

I remember a Corvair owner who "special ordered" a new Corvair coupe as
"500" instead of a Corsa, so "I can put the chrome where I want it"!

Plus, he actually wanted a 3-speed because 4-speeds (which he thought,
wrongly, were standard on the Corsa) had "one more gear to go wrong" whereas
the "500" gave him the choice that a Corsa didn't offer.

If I recall correctly, the 3-speed does not have "full synchro" whereas the
4-speed does?

Just my thoughts driving down "Memory Lane" ...
Charlie
