I just completed this project on my 1962, after having the metal powder coated. I used the Clarks staples, and used a 1/16" drill bit to enlarge the holes. The first one took me quite a while, but by the second one, I had mastered the technique and it took me less than a half hour to complete. I learned that it is best to start at one end, and get that end secured. Then I went to the other end, and got that end secured. Putting the staples into the rest of the sheet metal was quick. I drilled through the original holes, into the fabric, and then out the opposite side, following the path of the original holes. In my opinion, it was well worth the effort, since it looks like a NOS piece. I am going to do a write up on this on the Corvair Center forum, when I get a spare moment.
